20040131 Siem Reap
I travelled by speed boat on Tonle Sap from PP to Siem Reap. All sampans have to give way to these "monsters" or they will be thrown into the water. We were later transferred to smaller boats to navigate on the shallow lake in the floating village to the pier. In Siem Reap, the splendid Angkor, the jewel of Cambodia, recorded glorious Empire thousand years ago. It encompasses a large area with many great temples / ruins which proven significant knowledge of architecture and organized city planning in the past. Unfortunately lots of artefacts have been looted before the authorities realized the magnitude of this archaeological site. It is not possible to visit all sites in a day. The most famous Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm and Bayon are the “must see”. Do expect dense crowd of tourists here. I had a tour guide briefing the history to me in the morning, took a nap after lunch (day time was real hot there), and returned in the late afternoon for photographing. The softer light and much less tourists around are ideal for taking pictures. Many tourists are not aware of protecting the world heritage, stricter rules should be imposed. The local disco at Siem Reap played a mixture of western pop and traditional music. Worth to have a visit!
