20051207 Kolkata

My first day arrival at India (Kolkata) was not pleasant. Flight arrived at 12:00am and I did not book any hotel in advance. I knocked the doors of several hotels at Sudder St.in the midnight but they refused to let me in. Learned later that this was common practice for security sake. The first impressions of Kolkata were crowded, rubbish scattered around and heavy chaotic traffic. Rarely see modern buildings, it doesn’t look like one of the largest cities in India. Victoria Memorial Hall and Marble Palace are my picks, rests are not impressive. The congested Howrah Bridge area is seriously polluted and noisy. Many homeless erected their canvas shelters along the roads.

The New Market is huge, meat, fruits, dry goods, clothes, souvenirs, gold & jewelries etc are available sDSC008811.jpg Butchery section is surprisingly not so dirty Chicken stalls My lunch, potatoes + beans cooked with masala One of the grand tombs in Park St Cemetery, buried mainly VIP / rich foreigners of colonial era Victoria Memorial Hall is beautiful, the interior is equally impressive Reflection Tipu Sultan’s Mosque Flower market under Howrah Bridge The shelter of the homeless, very poor living conditions Birla Planetarium is informative, a ticket for the show costs Rs20 Sugar cane juice vendor
