20051210 Darjeeling

Had a jeep ride from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling. Hell, the 3.5 hr journey on the winding mountain roads was torturing, vomited twice. The highland climate was refreshing, but the gas emission from inefficient vehicle diesel engine was choking. The mesmerizing snow clad Khangchendzonga (3rd world highest mountain) set as backdrop. The market area is small, almost all shops are closed by 7:00pm. The poor collect anything “burnable” (carton, wooden box, paper, sticks, rubbish etc) to keep warmth in the chilly night. Many Nepali are staying in Darjeeling, I have been frequently called as Nepali or Bhutanese since we have similar features. Friendly people. The process to apply permit to Sikkim was time consuming.
