20051213 Gangtok

All foreigners must apply permit before entering Sikkim. Gangtok is set on the hill, like Darjeeling, but less populated, cleaner. Initially I thought Sikkim culture is prone to Indians, but I encountered more Tibetans instead, many gompa (lamasery) are around. Tsomgo Lake, perched at 3780m, 17km from Tibet border, is a slow 2 hr drive navigating over the mountains, passing by India Army camp. The lake is small, water not crystal clear, so much less charm compared to Namtso Lake (Tibet). Tourists are not allowed to trek on the hill due to its sensitive location close to China border.
