20060202 Allepey
At last came to the famous Kerala state for backwaters. Lots of tourists organized backwaters trip from Allepey to Kollam with the houseboats. Instead I hopped in a local passenger boat to Kottayam, only Rs 10 for journey 2.5 hr! Probably expected too much from backwaters, I didn't feel extra ordinary wonderful. No doubt it was relaxing, the green farms views were pleasant. Ferry navigated through main canals (highways) and crossed the Vermehend Lake. Some canals are completely covered with hyacinths which posting hazard to the living creatures in the water due to thinning oxygen content. Boating seems to be a good business here, many large houseboats with tourists on board were seen.
