Chiang Mai is famous for its traditional handicrafts and cultures of minority tribes. The 2 bazaars are good places to collect souvenirs and, and have no short of mouth-watering Thai foods. If you are daring, try fried scorpions, grasshoppers, worms and some grotesque insects. A day trip to Chiang Rai & infamous Golden Triangle is possible, but be advised no more lush poppy field is seen. It is possible to cross the river to a village on Laos territory (not so interesting). Many minority tribes populated in the hilly areas. Among the well known is the Karen "long-neck" tribe. The solid copper rings that coil around the neck symbolize “beauty”, only applicable for ladies. Elephant trekking is quite fun, do give a try.
